Using AI to get vaccines to market faster

Phlexglobal is a leading technology and services organisation in the life sciences sector. It offers a suite of products to help life science and pharmaceutical companies manage their clinical and regulatory operations.

“We’re very proud of the number of therapeutics and vaccines that Phlexglobal has been able to support to bring to the market over the years,” says Karen Roy, Chief Strategic Officer at Phlexglobal.

Automation drives efficiency and accuracy

Traditionally, documentation in the life sciences sector is based on very manual and paper-based processes. Phlexglobal’s software-as-a-service solutions offer a way for the sector to leverage technology to automate and streamline processes, to improve accuracy and to drive efficiencies.

Phlexglobal chose to host its solutions in Microsoft Azure. “Microsoft Azure was picked primarily for the speed to market,” says Daniel Koppers, Head of Research and Development at Phlexglobal. “It ties very, very well into our infrastructure.”

Karen Roy says, “Moving our products into the cloud has been an absolutely critical step and partnering with Microsoft enabled success.”

Moving to Microsoft Azure

By moving to Microsoft Azure, Phlexglobal has also been able to leverage Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and artificial intelligence.

Daniel Koppers says, “There are Microsoft Azure Machine Learning tools that allow us to spin up resources really quickly and chew through large data sets... it allows us to deploy leading-edge technology and very cost effectively.”

Through the use of new AI tools, Phlexglobal is helping its customers to drive further improvements to their operations. For example, its PhlexTMF solution helps to automate the indexing and management of trial master files.

Jim Nichols, Chief Product Officer at Phlexglobal, says, “There’s a 25 to 30 percent time improvement for individuals who are indexing those documents. By having those AI suggestions, we’re also seeing high degrees of confidence and accuracy coming from the AI models.”

Empowering customers to get products to market faster

These improvements are particularly significant at the moment. The experience of the pandemic has underlined how important it is to speed up the laborious, traditionally paper-based clinical and regulatory processes.

Jim Nichols says, “A great example of how this automation is helping us is with the many COVID-19 studies we’ve taken on this year. Probably over two dozen customers have come to us to help them with managing their trial master files using PhlexTMF. By being able to automate that process, we’re helping those customers achieve their results and their goals more quickly and efficiently than we would have been able to before.”
