The insurance industry Kenya was facing many challenges. The high cost of manual, paper-based operations had eroded profitability; reporting and documenting an automobile claim often took 10 to 12 days (Source: IRA TCF survey); and around 25% of the claims were fraudulent (Source: Deloitte Insurance Outlook report–East Africa). The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) partnered with SwiftAnt to digitalize insurance certificates and claims processes. To address these issues, SwiftAnt implemented its InsureTech solution Digital Insurance Apps powered by SwiftAnt (DIAS). DIAS is driven by a Microsoft suite of Azure Machine Learning, Azure Cognitive Services, AI, and blockchain. Claims can now be filed in just six minutes.
Customer Challenges
The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) is an umbrella body comprising 55 insurance companies. The AKI sought technology solutions to combat motor insurance fraud and address other industry challenges, including the high and rising cost of managing claims manually. An estimated one-quarter of claims were fraudulent, and fully reporting a claim often took 10 days or more. (Sources: IRA TCF survey and Deloitte Insurance Outlook report–East Africa) Further, the claims settlement process frequently took months, providing a poor customer experience and resulting in lack of trust in the insurance ecosystem.
Partner Solution
Microsoft Gold partner SwiftAnt recommended and implemented its DIAS (Digital Insurance Apps) solution for AKI country-wide, with two major components. DIAS Certificates – 2019 provides a centralized repository of insurance certificates and integrates with blockchain-enabled Azure services to make them tamper proof. Meanwhile, DIAS Insurance Platform – 2021 provides modules for online claims registration, and its Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Asset (KYA) features integrate with Azure Machine Learning, Azure Cognitive Services and blockchain to drive automated claims reporting, capture irrefutable risk information, mitigate fraud and enable repair estimates.
Customer Benefits
By adopting the DIAS solution from SwiftAnt, AKI was able to move to a fully digital claims registration approach with Zero Capital Expenditures (CAPEX) and digital capabilities from Day one. DIAS enables proactive checks to prevent double insurance, and police can now verify certificates authenticity instantly. Through DIAS, insurance companies gain access to risk information (digital evidence) for underwriting and claims validation. For policyholders, the automated DIAS claims processes provides access to much needed help at the time of accidents and provides instant KYC validation. In addition, the move to digital insurance certificates process has reduced costs by 50 percent.
“Kenya Motor Insurance industry has come a long way in solving industry challenges like mitigating industry fraud and improving profitability via digital technologies. Thanks to SwiftAnt’s DIAS solution in Microsoft Azure, we have been able to implement digitalization of motor insurance certificates and claims automation with zero-CAPEX commercial models.”
